I am a huge fan of - particularly supporting as Force, and still pop on ephinea psobb sometimes to perform with my fomar/fomarl. I have mostly avoided pso2 because I didn't want to take the prospect of obtaining a sudden IP ban for enjoying it outside of Japan, and a number of things were not translated, which makes it not readily accessible for me. I mostly assumed it was not coming to the us and didn't really look too much into it. I did play PSU when it was released and was fairly disappointed by it - if I recall right, PSU mostly dropped craftable things that took a lot of the hype from those wonderful red drops, and I didn't think the combat/music/environments did PSO justice.
I've seen a lot of hype for pso2, and because it is coming out soon, I wanted to know the general view. What's the teamwork/character progression in that game, and just how satisfying is your combat? My absolute favorite thing in PSO was challenge mode and running through maps as a minimal level with just what you find while solving puzzles was great - does pso2 have anything like this? PSO2 is its own game and frankly does not really feel as though PSO but it's much better Quality of Life. In regards to this RARE crimson drops or that Sealed J Sword, it does not feel like this. Don't get me wrong, there are some epic drops, just not as epic as those in PSOBB/PSO1.
There is much more fluid combat and high quality of life for sure in PSO2. I am not sure if that the OST in PSO2 is far better than PSO1 though that's an opinion. I would play PSO2 once it releases. It's really such a chill game. I am not normally a fan of the reception looter shot genre but something about PSO2 just really clicked with me when I played it. It has just the right dash of"12 year-old syndrome" trendy in addition to character customization that stinks games 10 years its senior out of their sport, incredible build diversity, a glut of material and above all, all-class leveling on the one character. It is not perfect and has some difficulties, but it is easily up there as one of the very pleasant free-to-play experiences you are ever going to get, period.
Extended time (5+ years) PSO2 JP participant here and I will attempt to answer some of your questions, as well as provide my personal opinion on PSO2. PSO2 is pretty fun if you were to play it lightly. It's a large amount of fashion (the true end match ), that's reasonably accesible to F2P players, at least judging from JP server market costs; Along with very liquid combat, although that is based upon the class. New"successor" classes (will) perform far better than old ones, but with the amount of courses in PSO2, I am certain you'll have the ability to find one which suits you.
Regarding combat: you have some classes that provide some utility in quests, like Techter, but generally each course is DPS-focused and there is little to no instances when you need collaboration like in other MMORPGs. And it will be even worse once Advanced/Successor classes release. Challenge manner does exist (though I'm not sure how it compares to PSO one), but it's vastly abandoned in JP server, and I doubt the situation will be any different in NA, at least not for long.
